About Seikou Martial Arts Academy

Thank you for taking interest in our Academy. Since 1994 Mr. Doug Davis has been teaching the martial arts and learning the best ways to run a successful martial arts program. He has learned through his experiences of teaching, competing, networking with other successful instructors, seminars, books, videos, classes and constant feedback.

When learning about us it is important to first understand our name: Seikou Martial Arts Academy. The word “Seikou” (pronounced Say-Koo) is a Japanese word that stands for SUCCESS! We chose this name since our martial arts program instills in students the life skills, character traits, and experiences necessary to be successful in all areas of life. Our motto is:

“Success Through Martial Arts”

Students will look back on the positive lessons that they learned from the martial arts and use those lessons in all endeavors in life.

We chose to use the words “martial arts” in our name since students will learn more than just one art. When teaching students how to realistically defend themselves it is important to prepare the student for any and all types of attacks. Each style of martial arts has its strong points and let’s say areas that are a little outdated with time. It is important to stay true to an art but it also important to not give students false or outdated information. An example would be that we no longer teach sword disarming techniques because the odds are the student will not be attacked by a sword at school or on the way home from work. The student may be tackled to the ground and assaulted, grabbed by a stranger or pushed around by the school bullies. I am sure that you agree that it is important to teach what to do in any and all situations?

The main art that we teach is Karate, which is an Okinawan form of martial arts. The name Karate means “Empty Hand” and it includes striking, throwing, joint locks and weapons. We also teach the kicking techniques of the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do which means “the way of the foot and hand.” The students will also be taught the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu, which means “the gentle art.” The techniques of Jiu-Jitsu focus on the defense of ones self from the ground. If the attacker is on top of you on the ground what would you do?

Lastly, the use of the word “academy” is used in our name because by definition academy is an institution of higher learning. Students will learn techniques that can be used to protect themselves while also building strong bodies, minds and spirit.
